Contact Lens Exams Go Beyond a Regular Eye Exam
A comprehensive eye exam tells us a lot about your vision and eye health, but contact lenses require a few additional steps. Because the lenses sit directly on your eyes, we need information beyond your glasses prescription alone.
During a contact lens exam, we’ll talk about your routine, how often you want to wear contacts, and any comfort or vision problems you’ve experienced with previous lenses. It all helps us answer a more useful question than “Can you wear contacts?”
What Happens During a Contact Lens Exam & Fitting?
We’ll talk about what you want from contact lenses, whether you’ve worn them before, and what your typical day looks like.
From there, your Charlotte optometrist can evaluate your vision and the characteristics of your eyes that affect contact lens fit. We’ll use that information to determine an appropriate contact lens prescription and recommend lens options based on your individual needs.

Glasses & Contact Lens Prescriptions Are Different
Your glasses sit a short distance in front of your eyes. Contact lenses sit directly on them. That difference means the prescriptions aren’t automatically interchangeable.
A contact lens prescription contains information specific to the lenses being fitted, not simply the corrective numbers from your eyeglass prescription. Your contact lens exam allows us to determine what your eyes need and how a particular lens fits before finalizing your prescription.
So, even if you already have a current glasses prescription, you’ll still need a contact lens evaluation before ordering prescription contacts.
